What Is Positive Behaviour Support?

Positive Behaviour Support, often called PBS, is an approach that focuses on understanding the individual and the reasons a behaviour may be occurring. Rather than looking at behaviour in isolation, PBS considers communication, relationships, routines, environments, wellbeing, strengths and unmet needs.

The goal is to identify environmental and other factors that may influence behaviour, teach useful skills and develop practical supports that improve quality of life. Strategies are shaped around the person's goals, preferences, circumstances and support network.

ThriveCircle's approach to Behaviour Support Adelaide services is collaborative, respectful and focused on meaningful participation, skill development and sustainable support.

Positive Behaviour Support Services

ThriveCircle provides NDIS Behaviour Support through a structured, person-centred process that can include assessment, planning, skill development and collaboration.

Functional Behaviour Assessment

Assessment may involve gathering information about the person's environment, communication, routines, strengths, needs and patterns associated with behaviours of concern. This information helps develop a clearer understanding of what may be influencing behaviour and what supports may be useful.

  • Understanding routines and environments
  • Exploring communication and support needs
  • Identifying strengths and existing skills
  • Reviewing patterns linked with behaviours of concern

Behaviour Support Plans

Behaviour support planning may identify proactive strategies, skill-development strategies, environmental adjustments, communication approaches and responses designed to support the person's goals and quality of life.

  • Proactive and preventative strategies
  • Environmental and routine adjustments
  • Communication approaches
  • Consistent responses across support settings

Skill Development

Positive Behaviour Support can include practical skill development that strengthens participation, choice, independence and everyday wellbeing.

  • Emotional regulation and coping skills
  • Communication and social skills
  • Independence and adaptive skills
  • Problem-solving and self-advocacy

Family and Carer Support

ThriveCircle can work collaboratively with families, carers and support networks so recommended strategies are clearly understood and can be implemented consistently across relevant environments.

  • Practical strategy guidance
  • Shared understanding of support approaches
  • Consistent implementation across settings
  • Collaborative review and adjustment
